Destination overview
About this destination
Djibouti lies in the Horn of Africa near the entrance to the Red Sea. Djibouti City is its capital and a major port. Its position beside the Bab el-Mandeb strait gives it considerable maritime importance.
French and Arabic are official languages, while Somali and Afar are widely spoken. The landscape includes arid plains, volcanic formations and salt lakes. Lake Assal lies in a dramatic depression surrounded by mineral landscapes.
The Gulf of Tadjoura brings coastal scenery and marine life into this dry environment. Trade routes and the connections between Africa and the Arabian Peninsula have strongly influenced the country's history.
My connection
My connection with Djibouti includes both French Navy service and personal sailing. During my naval service, Djibouti was a departure point for a mission towards the Strait of Hormuz. I later visited in a different capacity, as skipper of a sailing yacht on a voyage towards Madagascar. These two experiences gave the destination a dual place in my journey: a professional maritime staging point and part of a recreational ocean passage. The contrast between naval operations and skippering a yacht connects two enduring sides of my life at sea.
