Destination overview

About this destination

France lies in Western Europe and has both Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines. Paris is its capital, but regional identities are an essential part of the country. The Alps, Pyrenees, Massif Central and large river valleys create varied landscapes.

Normandy and Brittany preserve strong maritime traditions. Historic towns, rural villages and major cities reflect many periods of European history. French is the official language, alongside regional linguistic heritage.

Food, museums, literature and architecture all contribute to its cultural identity. France also includes overseas territories, extending its geographical connections well beyond mainland Europe.

My connection

My professional background includes French Navy service, with work on electrical generators and their diesel engines. My career also includes electrical-safety training with APAVE in Paris in 2017.

My original travel notes

France
France is a country in Western Europe that borders the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It has a diverse landscape that includes mountains, plains, coasts, and forests. It is famous for its cultural heritage, cuisine, and landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Museum.
France has a population of about 65 million people, of which about 80% are of French origin and 20% are of foreign origin. The official language is French, but there are also regional languages such as Breton, Occitan, and Corsican. The majority of the population is Roman Catholic, but there are also significant minorities of Muslims, Protestants, Jews, and others.
France has a high quality of life and well-being, according to various indicators. It has a universal health care system, a high life expectancy, a low poverty rate, and a strong social protection system. It also ranks high in education, culture, human rights, and environmental performance. However, France also faces some challenges such as unemployment, social inequalities, terrorism, and immigration issues.

Personal memories

I am French because I was born in France, but I prefer to return for holidays rather than live there. In my view, there is nothing there for me professionally now.

I have found the working culture frustrating: cigarette breaks, time at the coffee machine, and arguments about reasons not to work. I also find people haughty at times, convinced that they know everything about every subject and ready to lecture others. In my opinion, attitudes like these help explain the poor reputation that French people can have abroad.

I also feel that healthcare has deteriorated outside the major cities. In some regions, finding a doctor is difficult. My impression is that many doctors prefer to live in the south and work a 35-hour week.

Bureaucracy is everywhere, and I sometimes feel that administrative staff expect the public to serve them rather than the other way around. I could go into much more detail about these frustrations.

Nevertheless, France remains a good country for food, drink and cheese, especially if you live outside the big cities.
