Destination overview

About this destination

Ireland occupies most of the island of Ireland, with Dublin as its capital. The Atlantic shapes its western coast, while the Irish Sea lies to the east. Green pasture, lakes and low mountains form much of the inland landscape.

The Cliffs of Moher are among its best-known coastal landmarks. Irish and English are official languages. Monastic remains, castles and Georgian streets preserve different periods of history.

Literature, traditional music and storytelling play a prominent cultural role. Rural villages and lively towns provide a contrast with Dublin's museums and urban life, reflecting the country's strong regional character.

Recreational offshore sailing

My connection

My connection with Ireland comes from offshore racing along a route linking Saint-Malo, the Fastnet area and Cork. This was a sailing experience rather than an industrial or naval assignment. Reaching Ireland by sea made the coast, the offshore passage and the rhythm of life aboard the boat central to my visit. Fastnet and Cork are landmarks in this part of my maritime journey, reflecting the same enthusiasm for navigation that also led me to skipper sailing yachts elsewhere. On the map, this recreational sailing visit is grouped with tourism.
