Israel

Taken from a roof in the Abu-Tor neighborhood of Jerusalem at sunrise on Nissan/14/5769 to the Jewish calendar, which is the day (once in a 28 year cycle) which according to Jewish tradition the sun is in the same place (relative to sunrise over the horizon) as it was on the day of creation.

Destination overview

About this destination

Israel lies on the eastern Mediterranean coast. Its landscapes include coastal plains, hills, the Jordan Valley and the Negev Desert. Jerusalem contains major religious sites associated with Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

Its status is internationally disputed and should be understood within the wider regional context. Tel Aviv has a prominent Mediterranean waterfront and modern urban character. The Dead Sea forms another distinctive geographical setting.

Hebrew is the official language, while Arabic has a special legal status and is widely used. Archaeological heritage and contemporary culture coexist within a region whose history and political circumstances are especially complex.
