Destination overview
About this destination
Italy lies in southern Europe, with a peninsula extending into the Mediterranean. Rome is its capital and preserves extensive ancient and later architectural heritage. The Alps form much of its northern boundary.
The Apennines run through the peninsula, while Sicily and Sardinia are its largest islands. Venice, Florence and Naples each express a different regional history. Italian is the official language, alongside regional languages and dialects.
Local cuisine changes markedly from one part of the country to another. Art, engineering, maritime trade and agriculture all contribute to an identity shaped by both city cultures and varied landscapes.
My connection
Between 1993 and 1995, during the war in the former Yugoslavia, I stayed in Ancona and worked between the Italian port city and Sarajevo as a logistics coordinator. My connection with Italy was therefore professional, with Ancona serving as an important location in that assignment. This period linked my experience of the Adriatic with the realities of working across borders during a conflict. The assignment remains a significant chapter of my international journey, connecting the Italian and Bosnian sides of the same wartime logistics role.
