Destination overview

About this destination

Mayotte is a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean, within the Comoro archipelago. Mamoudzou is its main administrative centre. Grande-Terre and Petite-Terre are its two principal islands.

A coral reef encloses an extensive lagoon. Volcanic hills, coastal villages and mangroves shape the landscape. French is the official language, while Shimaore and Kibushi are widely spoken.

Local traditions reflect African, Malagasy and Indian Ocean influences. Fishing, lagoon environments and connections between the islands are central to its geographical character, which is distinct from mainland France despite its French administrative status.

French Navy service and mooring maintenance

My connection

My connection with Mayotte comes from French Navy service aboard the seagoing support vessel Tianee, where I served as an electrician. As in Madagascar and the Comoros, the assignment included refurbishment of first-class mooring buoys for warships. This was practical naval maintenance work rather than a tourist visit. Mayotte forms part of the Indian Ocean chapter of my service, alongside other island destinations where the vessel supported the mooring infrastructure used by naval ships.
