Destination overview
About this destination
Senegal lies on the Atlantic coast of West Africa. Dakar is its capital and occupies the Cap-Vert peninsula. The Senegal River forms part of the northern boundary.
Landscapes include coastal areas, Sahelian zones and the greener Casamance region. French is the official language, while Wolof and other national languages are widely spoken. Music, literature and local food have a strong place in cultural life.
Saint-Louis and Gorée preserve important, sometimes painful, chapters of Atlantic history. Fishing communities, urban markets and regional traditions reveal a country connected with both the ocean and inland West African trade routes.
