Destination overview
About this destination
Serbia is a landlocked country in southeastern Europe. Belgrade is its capital and stands at the meeting of the Sava and Danube rivers. Northern plains contrast with the hillier and more mountainous south.
Serbian is the official language. Orthodox monasteries preserve an important architectural and artistic heritage. Novi Sad reflects the history of the Danube region and Central European connections.
The country's urban culture includes varied music, food and café traditions. Roman remains, medieval sites and modern industrial towns reveal successive layers of history in a place situated along important Balkan transport and trading routes.
My connection
My connection with Serbia belongs to the period of the war in the former Yugoslavia. It forms part of the same wartime chapter of my international journey as my logistics work between Ancona and Sarajevo. This was not a tourist visit. I distinguish this experience from my later industrial assignments and personal travel, because its context was the conflict and the demands of that period. Serbia therefore appears among the work and service destinations on my map.
