Slovakia is a landlocked country in Central Europe. Bratislava is its capital and lies beside the Danube near Austria and Hungary. The Carpathian Mountains shape much of the northern landscape.

The High Tatras contain striking mountain scenery and glacial lakes. Slovak is the national language. Castles, historic towns and wooden churches preserve varied parts of its cultural heritage.

Lower-lying agricultural areas contrast with mountain regions and forest. Bratislava's old town, regional food and traditional crafts provide an introduction to a country whose history connects Central European trade routes with distinctive local communities.
