Destination overview
About this destination
South Africa occupies the southern end of the African continent. Pretoria, Cape Town and Bloemfontein have different national capital functions. Its coast faces both the Atlantic and Indian oceans.
Landscapes include high plateaus, mountain ranges, savanna and dry western regions. The country has multiple official languages and a wide range of cultural traditions. Cape Town is closely associated with Table Mountain and its harbour.
Johannesburg reflects the history of mining and urban development. Archaeological heritage, natural landscapes and the history of apartheid and its ending all form essential context for understanding the country.
My connection
My connection with South Africa includes tourism and a port call during the transit of FSO Unity from Ulsan in South Korea towards Nigeria. South Africa was therefore both a place to discover and a stop on a vessel’s professional journey between its Asian departure point and its African destination. This links the country with the offshore and industrial side of my career, while also preserving the personal travel aspect of the visit. Both experiences are represented on my destination map.
