Taiwan

Destination overview
About this destination
Taiwan is an island in East Asia, off the southeastern coast of mainland China. Taipei is its principal political centre. Its political status is disputed, with separate self-government under the Republic of China.
A mountainous interior contrasts with densely settled western plains. Mandarin is widely used, alongside Taiwanese Hokkien, Hakka and Indigenous languages. Temples, night markets and traditional neighbourhoods form part of urban life.
Ports and manufacturing centres reflect important maritime and industrial connections. Tea-growing hills, coastal landscapes and Indigenous cultural heritage reveal different aspects of the island beyond its modern cities and technology sector.
My connection
My work on the Taiwan frigate programme included the delivery transit of frigates bound for Taiwan, with Réunion forming part of that maritime journey. My original website gallery records my connection with the frigates in 1995–1998. This was a professional maritime assignment rather than tourism, linking the voyage itself with the wider programme. Taiwan remains an important destination in the naval chapter of my international career, alongside my service on support vessels and other demanding assignments at sea.
