About this destination

Tenerife is a Spanish island in the Canary Islands, off the northwestern coast of Africa. It has volcanic origins and rises sharply above the Atlantic. Mount Teide is its best-known natural landmark.

The north and south of the island have contrasting climatic and landscape characteristics. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a principal city and port. San Cristóbal de La Laguna preserves an important historic urban centre.

Spanish is the main language. Coastal towns, inland villages and volcanic terrain provide different perspectives on an island shaped by Atlantic trade, agriculture and its distinctive natural environment.
