United Kingdom

Destination overview
About this destination
The United Kingdom comprises England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. London is its capital and has a long history as a trading and cultural centre. Coastal geography and maritime connections have strongly influenced its development.
Landscapes range from lowland farmland to Scottish mountains and island groups. English is widely used, alongside Welsh, Scottish Gaelic and other linguistic traditions. Historic cities, castles and industrial heritage preserve different periods of its history.
The North Sea adds an important offshore energy dimension. Regional cultures and very different local landscapes mean that experience of the country varies considerably between its constituent nations.
My connection
My documented UK assignment was in the Shetland Islands on the Laggan–Tormore project for SPIE and Total UK, from 2012 to 2015. As electrical superintendent, I coordinated electrical construction, ATEX-related work, contractor interfaces and a team of 16 people. The Shetland destination page gives the local context of this assignment.

England has a high standard of living, with a GDP per capita of about $42,000. The life expectancy at birth is 79 years for males and 83 years for females .
Personal memories
I have visited several times by train and plane, but most often by sailing yacht. Between 1998 and 2000, I took part in races with R.O.C., crossing the Channel from Cherbourg and sailing towards Jersey, Cowes, Southampton, Poole and Guernsey.
We had a great time with friends, including some who came from Paris for the weekend. Below is Nilros, a sailing yacht built by a friend. I think he will recognise his boat.
